Digging deeper

While prowling the internet at
http://satisfyingretirement.blogspot.ca/2014/12/time-to-come-clean.html I can across

"Your life is comfortable, uneventful, with nothing new to look forward to.... no more challenge, no time clock, no reason to get out of bed in the morning.... plenty of time to take naps, watch movies. All these get old. My suggestion - go back to school, study something that you are totally uncomfortable with...then take a semester abroad.."

which simply describes my life, and that feeling of needing more. I have always claimed to not read fiction, but I have read diet books and numerous food information type books trying to beat my food/overeating issues. But I now know much of that is fiction. Oh well, I guess I do read fiction after all. Just not the fiction genre. That food/overeating area of my life still needs more work. I know I have a problem, and there is no useful medical help for the problem.

Life need purpose, as well as positive attitudes, engagement, relationships, meaning and achievement. It is apparent that life needs much more, it needs a philosophy of life, once we slow to the point that we have time to think. Before, it was the next thing that needed doing, each day. There was little slack time. Developing a philosophy of life is not a simple matter, but a worthy one. I have explored much philosophy, and it is what that is not clearly said in the books that needs explanation, not necessary right explanation, but explanation. Is that fiction, but not fiction genre?

The other think that hit me this morning while thinking about my hierarchy of values, is that while we must support our nature and human nature, human nature must come first. Our physically body makes demands which we can provide for or not, but "failure to provide" does not mean that the body's demands are going to go away. It just keeps on demanding.   Life can be extended by "failure to provide" excessive amounts of food, assuming that it is not a mineral or vitamin deficiency. The desire still remains. But what if this is a physical manifestation of something like Prader-willi, or just one of those genes rather than the whole group? That could explain the whole problem.

The medical community is great at solving big problems where they can generate revenue from. They are great at identifying and fixing problems where they know the solution. They are not so great at fixing problems where they cannot make money off of the solution. Diabetes could be greatly reduced by simply renaming it Carbohydrate Intolerance, the solution; do not eat carbohydrates.

But then what do I know?

Food Excess Bah hum bugs

"It is our failure to to understand the essential nature of a emotion as it arises that get us into trouble. Once we understand the emotion, they tend to dissolve."

"It is not the situation that disturbs us but our thinking about the situation."

"There is a space between our observations and the conversion into a adequate impression."

Many emotions arise out of lack of fulfillment of one of our delusions of how life should be or the frustration of a delusion or frustration of an expectation. It is easier to see this in an example: If I have a expectations that I should be able to drive to my destination without traffic interference, I am likely to be pissed of that I cannot when everyone else is also trying to get some where. We just have to many people, too many cars, and need to get around just too much. So to overcome this, I must understand that traffic will be slow, zero flow, and getting worse. There is no solution other that not driving, or expect delays. This should end traffic frustration.

We likely have an idea that life should be pleasant; says who, my expectations. It is not likely so much of the time. Stress over a dis-eased mind, living in a seasonal smorgasbord, where food is plentiful, and suffering from a mild Prader-Willi like syndrome or mental state. I cannot describe it in any other way. The only thing that works well is to go away. This paper's description of eating issue on page 3 - 4, describe my eating behavior when I am not in control of it.

I think I could lose the remainder of this weight in a locked metabolic facility. But how could I keep it off after? try a 5-2 plan, locked up for 5 days, free for 2.

Prader-Willi is genetic: one either has it or does not, but there is a considerable range in the severity of it. It was blamed on excess ghrenlin, or on shortage of leptin, both of which may occur. Here is a description. I just cannot stop overeating in the presence of food. The only solution is to take myself away and do something. But enough about my problems. The solution is to do something, something that I do not dislike. That is the problem.

After all the reading and studding about food, diet, the attitudes of self that cause eating, food addiction, emotional maladaptive eating, eating disorders, temptation and environmental issues, physical causes of overeating including hyperinsulinemia, habit, cravings, desires, willful overeating, I am left to conclude that it is some physical overeating drive like some mild form of Prader-Willi. The treatment is to lock up the food, and that treatment works, but it leaves me unsatisfied. Such a fun way to live.

Re-brainwashing

Re-Brainwashing

"We remain emotionally disturbed because we believe some unrealistic and illogical thoughts originally imbibed. To become undisturbed, it is necessary that we see what irrational self-indoctrinations were and energetically and consistently work at de-indoctrination" Paraphrased from A. Ellis.

So the acid test is what is wrong with my thinking? And then what is right thinking? But there is an alternative, that is to overlay my present thinking with a philosophy of life, or two, and then the see what does not fit, and fix those areas. The problem arises is that in the modern world, nothing fits. It is the modern world that is not natural, and is changing faster that we can adapt. Something must go. Yet, without modern technology, we could not have come to this point. Perhaps it is time to figure out what right thinking really looks like.

Zeno first guideline is that we should live in accordance with Nature, worldly nature and human nature. A few days ago, I talked about human nature here. So what is worldly nature.

Nature follows a set of natural laws, gravity, Newtons, chemical, physical, electrical/magnetic, etc. We know a few of those, and likely the effect of most of the natural forces. We do not understand the cause of much, gravity, electro-magnetic, and much more. Oh well. We understand even less of the biological laws, but we know there is a natural force that drives appetites for food, sex, survival, social interaction, and the like. So we do not know the forces; how can we know right thinking? We cannot know, only test to see if it works or not. If it does not work, it is likely wrong, if it does work it might be right. If widely separated groups seem to agree, the odds of it being right increase, unless they all copied from the long lost original source, but if they have been 'tested and approved' by all these others, perhaps they are true.

The language and emphasis vary, but the ideas are common. Consider the concept that mental suffering is caused by delusions, expectations, cravings, desires, attachments, clinging, wants, greed,
aversions, and the like. We want something that the universe cannot provide, or something in the future that the universe cannot provide. There is something to the concept, regardless of what that is. If we let go of these thing we want, which are beyond what the universe can provide, our mental issues are released. It does not matter which part of the desire chain we let go of, the conceived need, the solution, the desire, the yearning, any part of the desire chain, and it all goes. It may be easier to displace the desire chain by desiring something within our sphere of influence, judgement, desires, impulse, and to do something to displace the desire group.

Action is often used as a method of replacement of thinking, desiring, or the like. Mindfulness, paying attention to what is happening, second by second, in the now, in as much detail as required, can be a means of mindfulness. It is even better if we enjoy the activity and are good at it. Those two, being good at it and enjoying it are not attached. I recall a supervisor who enjoyed being a supervisor, but was not good at it; I also recall one who was good at supervision, but not at mentoring, nor did he enjoy it. It was hell for him.

So what does this have to do with re-brainwashing? We learn via picking up from others the first time through. We can relearn better ways via education, training, reading, and the like. We are responsible for our current beliefs. We can change them at will, more or less, but may decide to make them more correct. Now that become difficult when we live is a society where commonly held beliefs are wrong; the reality is there is no god, and yet so many are pushing the god concept. Today is Christmas, and the marketing around the god concept. It is difficult to resist all the bullshit of the mob. But I am not interested in what the mob thinks, and for the most part, the mob is not interested in what I think. If you are reading this, you are not part of the mob and I thank you.

The second decision

To end chronic overeating, that is overeating at most every meal, not much but some, there is a second decision required.

What am I going to do instead of overeating?

It is a time management question,
an energy partitioning question,
a behavioral displacement question,
an maladaptive emotions relearning question,
a habit change question,
a desire modification question,
a food addiction question,
a life skills, philosophy, psychology, environmental, temptation, question.

The third question may look something like.... What will my life look like after I leave the table that much earlier and go to a place where food is not available or eating is not conducive?

But then with all that activity, will I get tired too soon?

Enough to think about today.

The first decision

I was wandering around the happy fat sights, why, I do not know. http://healthateverysizeblog.org/ , https://danceswithfat.wordpress.com/  It occurs to me that at the start of any weight loss contemplation, one must make a decision, am I happy at this weight or do I want to adjust my weight?  It is that decision that plots the direction. If you are happy where you are, so be it, it is your life.  The prime directive applies.

The happy fat sights are all about living at and weight, and dealing with those "obese" issues. For those of us who have decided to try to understand this disease of obesity to beat it into shape, we soon see that it will be a long battle, and along the way we will see how far we have come. I have not yet beat this problem, but have explored many aspects of obesity, and have more to explore, but have let go of 50 kgs, and a bunch of attitudes. That sight reminded me of one more that I have let go, caring what other people think. It is none of my business.

It is difficult to put up with all the untrained thinking when we have explored Stoicism a bit. It is just untrained, as untrained drivers on the road are just like aggressive cattle. A few days of training and a better attitude would improve the traffic a lot. A week of classroom education on driving, dangers, stupid moves, and the like, would help, just like the driver training that we took in the sixties to lower our insurance. The biggest difference is in attitude, intention, knowledge, and the like mental exercises. Just because you got a license does not mean you know how to drive well.

But back to Stoicism. It teaches so much, and yet there is more to learn. It is not that I know that much, but there is so much bullshit in the weight loss industry. It is just hard to go along with the government when they are so wrong. http://www.diabetes-warrior.net/

Enough, back to work.

division of the calorie

On somebody's post a few days ago, I do not remember where now, there was a statement of calories from fats, carbohydrates, and proteins have different distributions to energy, storage, and thermal effects. I have been ruminating on this for several days, and tried to look up that post, to no avail. It matters not. The digestion processes do create different distribution, but even this is not fine enough divisions.

Fructose is not handled as glucose, both are handled somewhat differently as liquid than as solid forms. There is a time to absorb effect also. There is a liver take up glucose issue, and once the liver is "overflowed" either through rate of glucose or amount, it dumps to the body, where glucose is rapidly taken up by muscle and fat cells, if the insulin is adequate.

The fats are handled differently, mono and pufa are absorbed, and passed through, along with FFA's that are produced in the digestion process. Triglycerides are split to glycerides and FFA's. Medium chains are split to ketones bodies. Also anything else may be split to ketones in the absence of glucose. Glycerides are split into glucose and/or glycogen.

Some proteins are split in peptides, some are absorbed whole, some are split in several peptides long chains before being absorbed. These peptides are circulated until picked up by something, liver, tissue cells, kidneys, and used, converted to ketones or carbohydrates for fuel.

Each process uses energy and produces heat. Protein being the highest heat producer, fat the next, and carbohydrate being the lowest heat producer. Carbohydrate, on the other hand, drives insulin which in turn drives storage. It is the highest storage portion, and once in storage, insulin must go low, aka... we must pass through mild hunger... to get glucose out of storage.

OK. So what?

This may be the simple explanation of  why hunger is not a major problem on low low carb. We have passed through hunger, insulin is low, carbs and FFA's are coming out of storage easily.

This may also point out that meat is the best stuff for satiation, for it provides protein, a bit of carbs, and a bit of fat. Forget power protein, it is to quick to digest. Cooked fish and dairy are also fast to absorb. The modern chicken melt in the mouth. Old breeds of chicken do not grow as fast; and seem to be slower digesting. An old Huderite chicken can keep me going for days.

But that is my story, and I will stick to it until I forget it or it gets displaced, since I can only keep one idea in my head at one time.

On Food Junkies

Vera Tarman and Phil Werdell's new book Food Junkies is worth a read for anyone having difficulty staying on a food program or diet. They "categorize of  the corresponding behaviors of these conditions as problems that occur within the normal eating, emotional eating, and food addiction spectrums."

This book is worth a second read and a good study for any one who is new to the struggle against food addiction.

What it all comes down to is that "food addiction" and "emotional eating" must be beat before problems of "normal eating" can be addressed. OK. They ignore all the temptation (low impulse control),  chemical physical conditions (hyperinsulinema, excess ghrenlin, stress issues), unrelenting cravings, irrational desires, baiting, willful overeating, and the like.  Fair enough, the book does not claim to address the obesity/general overeating problem.

It points to the usual suspects, sugars, wheat, gluten, dairy proteins and unnamed fats. It talks about the usual hormone suspects, dopamine, serotonin, endorphins, insulin, leptin, D2 sensors. There is not much new here for the likes of me who has read most of there references. It is a wonderful summary for someone who has just realized that they could be a food addict. The take home is simple. "Quit eating any and all addictive foods." Ok, simple enough directions. Identification of the foods and doing it is not so simple.

Now the maladaptive behaviors of eating disorders next with the simple advise of fix the maladaptive issues with a proper solution/belief system or behavior. OK.

US government

The US government must really hate the low carb movement. They got Mary C Vernon for tax evasion. Is that not the same charge they used on Al Copone?

Just saying.

Reminder to self

The enemy is high insulin.

Obesity is a dysregulation in fat storage. It is brought about at the end of a causal chain. Overeating is caused by a dysregulation in the endocrine system. High insulin locks FFA into the fat cells and that causes hunger. The cycle begins, and is kept going by any of the following:

Stress causes cortisol, from the pituitary glands, which cause hunger, and high insulin.

Wheat, sugar, and starch also raise insulin, resulting in the same disruption, but from a separate cause.

Fructose in a larger quantity, as from honey in tea, grapes, or other sweet fruit causes a dopamine high which drives overeating, more fructose being the preferred. To feel this, one must be clean of sugar for a while first. It is adaptive, that is requires more for the same effect. This is a separate mechanism. This is a eat fruit when fruit is available genetic drive (winter is coming). Fructose always comes with glucose, which demands insulin release, and the endocrine system obliges.

Some food provide dopamine and opioid peptides directly. Wheat, processed meats and dairy products are typical examples. Butter, processed cheez and hard cheese are the worst.

Anyone with low impulse control is subject to these issues. We need sufficient impulse control to overcome the primal brain drives, or to know the causes and avoid the causal chain. Environment and temptation must be controlled until we learn impulse control. This too can be learned, and it chains to an unconscious desire, which we must suppress or displace rationally. It becomes frustrating to keep on displacing this genetic desire caused be ignorant of the problem food pushers and baiters (grannies, old aunts, food pushing friends).

We need to learn impulse control, desire control and judgement control, AKA Stoic trifecta.

But what do I know?

Desire Quenching

During my searching on desire quenching I came across this web sight http://noahpinionblog.blogspot.ca/2012/08/desire-modification-ultimate-technology.html

Here are some experts:

First, let's imagine the ultimate form of desire modification (or "d-mod" as I will sometimes refer to it). In this ultimate form, each person would have a computer in his or her brain that could change his or her desires, habits, beliefs, personality, and emotions in any conceivable way. Here are some thoughts about what that would imply for the human species:

Such a technology would mean the instant end of economics as we know it. Utility theory assumes something called "local nonsatiation", which means that people always want more of something. With d-mod, local nonsatiation goes right out the window, since you can instantly dial yourself to a "bliss point" where you are just perfectly satisfied and don't want anything else. That's the end of scarcity.

Instant nirvana. These "happies" (note the semi-pun) might just sit on sidewalks, letting their beards grow long, until they either died of starvation or were kept alive by altruistic passers-by.

But the extra life satisfaction that we'll get from d-mod, even so, will represent a bigger a boost to utility and happiness than any technology before or after. It will put the lie to the old (and wrong) idea that technology doesn't change human nature.

Nirvana is state of mind, where joy is high, and there is complete acceptance of the world, as it exists. There is not desires, aversions, expectations, delusions, only peace. But hold on here people, we can do this by the use of Stoic though patterns, at least in theory. We have no need of a computer program, we can program ourselves, if we so desire, but that is a desire that only we can satisfy for ourselves. It is within our own control. We have great ability to change" his or her desires, habits, beliefs, personality, and emotions in any conceivable way."
Well  not in any conceivable way, but radically. Some things are up to us and some are not. Of our control is our judgements. Emotions are the result of poor judgements causing frustration, or discord among our beliefs. All this list is within our power to change, and think that makes it so. The question become what do we want to change into? And then, will we like our new personality better? What will other think of our new personality?

What I am saying is that we now have that capacity, after learning a few Stoic tools, for the lack of a better word. I am not interested in what the mob is interested in and few of the mob is interested in what I am interested in.

Bliss point is usually a mix point of perfect mix of flavors, sugar, fat and salt in a processed food that makes in hyper-palatable, and delightfully to the normal people, poisons to some of us obese and exobese. It is the ideal mix that has no satiation amount. Dialing ourselves to zero desire, full joy would be a alternative meaning for bliss point, but a suitable term. Oh well.

There is a danger that if such a program was possible, we would become addicted to it, and destroy ourselves through over use. We humans are capable of destroying ourselves through over consumption of most anything.

But what do I know?

Squashing Desire

How does one squash desire? Lets first summarize a bit of what we know about desire. Desire and motivation reside in the primitive part of the mind, below unconscious and conscious. These tend to rise after thoughts. We also know "that thinking make it so" when we are talking about the mind. So if I do not consider the possibility of "x, a concept", then there is no desire and no motivation toward that "x, a concept".

So how does this really work? In the Stoic concepts, the things not up to us are considered to be "indifferents". We do not care about them, we cannot effect them, it then makes no difference to us. OK. That may take some getting used to. Those indifferents can further be divided into preferred and dispreferred. Consider health, if we have it, it may be preferred, if we do not have it, health becomes just a indifferent, we do not have, and stop considering it something of value to us in the now. This is a breakdown of the acceptance process. Stop valuing, stop desiring.

So how does this apply to food. "I do not even considering eating anything after my portion", it stops becoming a possibility, the desire stops. Well, thinking makes it so, or at least in the world of the Stoic philosopher.

But what do I know?

The skeptic stoic

It is all empty and meaningless and the universe has absolute no purpose. We are at a time of great personal danger form the world. The universe has no purpose, and we individuals are insignificant. But we organic identities have a purpose; to reproduce to overpopulation and then die off to half the population. That is where we are headed. China with there one child policy may be have the right idea.

Culture and the governance of the food industry is corrupt, and are headed in the wrong direction. We are on our own, but many of us now see the danger in sugar, grains, O6 oils, processed foods, and wrong medical advice. It is money driven advice. Watch Sharma words and do the opposite of some of his advice. Use him and a counter mentor, see what he does and avoid doing that.

Now that we know that it is all empty and meaningless, and the at the universe has no purpose, we are free to create one, any purpose to get us out of bed. On the other hand, we are free to stay in bed, if we are willing to accept whatever that lifestyle brings.

I can say that what the purpose is is irrelevant to most but ourselves. There may be dependents that care, and few that are interested, but our purpose does not impact them. It does not matter anyway, the universe has no purpose and the individual is insignificant, just an ant in the big picture, or the view from above.

Now we can paint on a purpose, since the purpose may be meaningless anyway. Obesity is a chain problem, a circular problem, and a complex problem. It has elements of physical, psychological, philosophical and spiritual. We need to understand ourselves to understand this problem. Now there is a field of  confusion. We are walking habits at the core, or maybe not the core, it may just be a another layer or dimension of us. Habit drives much. Habit is not rational. That is why diet alone is not sufficient for some of us, we are bundles of habit.

We must not satisfy desires, but rather eliminate desire, squash desires. But what do I know?

Is Overeating Just a Habit?

This is a troubling question. If none of the other seven groups( http://philosophyofweightmanagement.blogspot.ca/2014/11/what-is-normal.html ) of causes apply, is overeating just a habit?

Now how do we separate out habit from all the other causes? It is in the attitude just before overeating occurs, perhaps. Is it an automatic response to walking past the refrigerator? It it a automatic desire to eat something in front of the TV? Is it the pull of habit or one of those other drives?

I will need to watch a bit more, watch my thoughts, and see if I can pick out the difference.

Now how does one overcome a habit? displace it with something else. So what am I to do as a replacement activity?

Why do we overeat?

The question is why do we overeat?

Useless answers... We have either a physical or mental problem. We should head directly for a doctor or a psychologist....

There are three reasons we overeat:
uncontrolled hunger, uncontrolled cravings, uncontrolled desires

Hunger, cravings and desires. OK.

We don't realize why we're eating it and why we can't control our appetite for it.

Zoe Harcombe: Candida, Food Intolerance ,Hypoglycaemia

Ah yes, these are real problems, I do not have any of these beyond food induced hyperinsulinemia, the other half of hypoglycaemia, but often when I am craving my BG=5.2 or 5.3. Not the problem.

Food Intolerance, the body dumps on a bunch or adrenalin, and we are off to the races. Not the problem.

Learned behavior, habit.  OK

Fight or flight Comfort eating, Numbing out, Frustration, Self attack

Social Influence, Mindless Eating, Visual Cues as Guides, Convenience

and then there is my list of 8 groups that includes most of the above.http://philosophyofweightmanagement.blogspot.ca/2014/11/what-is-normal.html

So the only thing new out of this bunch of searching is desire, but wait, excessive desire is there.

So how does one get rid of a unwanted desire?

Sharma's Video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q53Gr2oKPIs&feature=youtu.be

It is a bit long and nothing new... for someone who has been fighting the obesity problem for as long as I have been... but contains a lot of basic stuff... that the new to the battle can learn from. A few things were said that I know are right, but I have never heard expressed.

In my opinion though, the first thing we need to do is remove all the appetite stimulus from our diet. Those are sugar, wheat, and processed foods. These may vary between people.

Ok so here some of the answers, once we get beyond the physical, psychological, and philosophical issues.

Cure Willful Overeating

So what does one need to do to overcome willful overeating? If we were computers, reboot. But we are not, so we need to take Socrates advise and come to know ourselves, and develop a concept of how we think, and how we ought to think, and make the switch.

This is an overview of what I have learned. It is a bit radical and briefly explained, but I have changed much of my personality. We were brain washed unconsciously to get to this point, now we can do it consciously and intentionally with logic.

I have stared into the abyss of my psyche and it was empty and meaningless, and even that was meaningless and empty. I need to apply a meaning and a purpose and build a new character clear of these little annoying characteristics like overeating. But how is this possible? It is but it is a multi-step process, and required a leap of faith into a thought experiment. The result is a clear, well, slightly foggy, trail to rebooting in effect. It is circular logic, circular reprogramming, gone through many times, one conception at a time.

Some things are up to us and some are not. That which is up to us includes our beliefs, our values, our opinions, and little else. There a few thing more we have influence over. See Epictetus for fuller description. We can control some of our personality, the upper functions.

There is a model of the human mind processing that divides the mind into three types of activities. There are more, but we will deal with three this time through. All we need to do is slow down, step back and watch our mind at work. This is a neat trick, and many talk of this process. Micheal Brown, in the Presence Process explains this the best, but also several old shrinks, Arron Beck and Victor Frankel talk about what seems to be the same process. We can make the brain into a three black boxes with a space between each process that we can consciously intervene in.

The first is an observation black box*. It forms an 'adequate impression'. There is space there where we can have the conscious mind intercede and put in a test; like 'is this any of my concern' or 'is real or bullshit' or 'should I care about this'. We hand that adequate expression* off to what I will call the conversion matrix* part of the mind, where the unconscious stored conversion analogs examine the adequate impression. This automatic conversion matrix of the unconscious mind is where many of our problem arise. It may need an overhaul, as mine certainly did. It is part of our belief system and under our control enough to be able to be altered. We can add things like 'sugar and grains should not be eaten'. 'Processed food should not be eaten.'   'He is just an idiot beating this gums' and thereby deal with all the opinion of others. Withholding any input is freeing, we do not need to process anything that is not from a reliable source. It is just noise. This stops a lot of activity.

The third part is where we form a volition, if one is required. A zero alternative*, do nothing, think nothing, must be considered. It is just useful for me to blank out idiots in traffic and elsewhere. This is a freeing step for there is much that is none of my concern or does not need a response. Through this process I can hold the stoic big picture attitude, gratitude for what I have and know, and a sense of wonder. The stoic big picture is different from humility, defined as not being greater than anyone, which mathematically is being less than every one, but rather we are all equal and insignificant.

It is the gratitude for what I know, and know is right, that allows me the confidence to go through life knowing that I am right in my process, following virtue, and logic. There is much bullshit in this world and I must not let myself get drawn in to that vortex and get sucked down the drain into problems again. All one need do is smile and carry on in my process.

My logic of weight loss plan is to set carbohydrates and protein where they need to be, and as low as possible, and lower fat as far as satiation will allow. Now I just need to do that. But what do I know?

* terms that may need more explanation

Willful Overeating

What is willful overeating?

It is that rotten six year old in us coming out.  FU, I am just going to sit here and eat this cherry pie all by my self. Bugger off and leave me alone.

The first time I saw this outside of my self was in a young lady, maybe 20. "I am not gonna move until this jug of wine is gone". I did not know what to make of that. I was about the same age. But that is the same thing that I feel occasionally, but with food. It starts with a bit of sugar, and a bit of boredom, indecision, depression and the available food. It is not a logical event, it just happens. The insulin goes up, and eating occurs. It always involves a sugar, the only thing that can be absorbed at 20 calories per minute, 1200 calories per hour. A couple of hours, we are ready to eat again. The sugar runs out, we get a insulin high, which drives craving for more. The cycle has begun. We get away with this behavior a few time, maybe quite a bit; it become a way of eating; binge and fast.  There may be a bit of starches and fats involved in this, but it is the fructose that drive the sweetness and the desire for more. The desire is a strong primal desire, and we must resist it with a weak conscious impulse not to eat. When the food is present, our weight loss plan loses.

The ability of we humans to put away fructose, sugar mix is likely a genetic adaption from the time when fruit occurred in the fall, and was in excess for a short period of time. This fattened us up for winter when food was less available. Now we have excess of fruit and it's processed counterparts 365 days each year. There is no seasonal availability.

We must be taught at a young age to moderate the intake else we will end up with an obese population. Weight, (pun) we have an obese population. This by it's self is not enough, it is just one factor in the process. We must learn to eat regular small meals, not binge and fast life style, or one large meal each day.

Genetically, we are programed to overeat on fruits;  sugar rich products are a modern extension of the fruits. A bit of fruit occasionally is not a big item, but the marketing of fruit, and processed sugar eatable products is just too much.

Perhaps we need to become militant against the purveyors of sugar and related products, there marketing, and agents. They are not the cause, but they are necessary for the problem to exist. For some people, sugar is sufficient to cause the problem, and many people think it tastes divine. That is not a concept that I can support. It is poison. With the ongoing temptation, it become torture for those of us who have sugar addiction like or similar problems.  We want, that is the problem. The want is stronger than our resistance.

What is normal?

http://gardengirlkp.blogspot.ca/2014/11/the-stairs-vs-elevator-from-weighty.html got me thinking about the changes that I have made in my life during this recovery process. First what is normal? Most of the people that I know that have lost a great deal of weight, 1/3 of there original body mass, go back out and regain it and more. I did that 7 or 8 time in my first 55 years of obesity. That is normal, according to Dr. Sharma. OK. Those who have lost and are keeping it off are not therfore normal.

Half the people are of below average intelligence. That is the numeral normal. But when we speak of normal behavior, how do we define that? Are speaking of expected behavior? Are we speaking of the individual or of the population? Normality is seen as good while abnormality is seen as bad, within a population. But hold on now, 1/3 of the population is obese, 1/3 overweight, so are we talking good vs bad, or by number?

What has changed in my recovery is the way that I think. It has put me at odds with the extended family, society, and their food pushing obeseogenic ways. It has made me aware of the bullshit in our modern society, Hollywood concepts of reality, of how people live, and has instilled a passion for deeper understanding of the obese human psyche, and it's change to the recovered human psyche. In that passion lies the true nature of recovery. It may be just the passion that makes the difference. I see all these doctors talking about the problem, but none, well few, talk about the change in thinking required for recovery. It is that change in psyche that is the switch in the mind that get thrown to go into recovery. How to throw that switch is the key, the hidden secret, that is recovery.

For me, that switch is passion, desire, motivation, to do the next right thing, regardless of what I may feel like. It may be in defining a purpose in life, a change in priorities, a reason to get up in the morning and do the work of a human this day. Others may have that already, but that feeling of purpose is not (was not) present each day that I am not in recovery.

I have seen the abyss, the empty and meaningless center of  the human psyche, and realized that first layer over the empty and meaningless life is purpose or meaning, be that unconscious or conscious.  What that purpose is is irrelevant, whether it be to fatten the people you care about, and thereby shorten there lives, or to struggle against the food and nutrition ignorance, or the expansion of the understanding of the human psyche, and in particular, this humans psyche.

We have a health industry that does not care about nutrition, and a food industry that does not care about health. (quote from somewhere) Each in fact do better financially if they work against what should be part of there respective industries. We are each alone in a fight for our lives, whether we realize that or not. We also have a recovery industry in which each group is stuck in there own process, treating what ever part they treat. They sell the processes, not recovery. Each works for there own special group of victim, client. We are self selecting through recovery, it works if we recover, or it helps. Some do not recover, and they must go elsewhere or not recover. It is their choice.

IMO there are about 8 groups of causes of overeating. Each group has similar characteristics, and similar solutions. I suffer from all 8 groups. These groups I have currently labeled:
  1. willful overeating,
  2. excessive desire,
  3. habit and conditioning,
  4. spiritual disease ( lack of right knowledge),
  5. physical issues,
  6. environment and temptation,
  7. maladaptive behaviors (eating disorders, stress, boredom, frustration, indecision), and
  8. food addictions.

But then, what do I know?

On Passion, On Teachability

Passion is a drive that provide the energy to keep on doing a thing, pursuing an idea, when we have no clear rational reason to pursue. Well we may have a reason. It may be a belief that the subject is worth pursuing. I may just need to pursue it, I do not know why. Many religions are that way. There are forms of logical argument that are that way, they are just compelling.

We need a definition that all agree on before an philosophical argument can be conducted. God requires an definition. If we consider it to be something that conduct super-national things, since it is supernatural it can only exist as a concept, not in reality. It is therefore a belief that may make you feel better, but will not make you better by intervention, but make make you correct your own life. That is better than nothing. What would be even better is the truth and your own self correction. These are passion driven subjects for many people. Understanding this may be the foundation to unity of peaceful people who 'accept you can believe whatever you want, but you may not force it onto anyone, even your children.' We need to cooperate to survive. That is the starting point of making peace in this world. It is those who think their beliefs are more important than survival that are the problem.

It is probable that there is no supernatural, and therefore no god. All religions people must tolerate my (our) beliefs if there is to be world peace, just as we must tolerate their beliefs in the supernatural. There is nothing after death, the mind probably stops on death. I am no more, but I cannot know death. For when I am, there is no death; when death occurs, there is no me, we cannot coexist. Simple. All that I learn in this lifetime must be written to be transferred to others and the next generation, when they are ready to learn and they have become teachable.

Teachability requires the prerequisite knowledge, the interest to understand the subject, and the tolerance of the language to drag out the underlying meaning, if there is one. It is my opinion that the underlying concept is the important part, not the words. To illustrate this point, consider that in Stoicism, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, and likely others the same group of concepts can be found, explained so differently that until the effect of the concepts are explored, these concepts appear different. It is only the effect that is the same. It is the effect that we humans need to survive. So which concept is right? Likely the simplest that does not depend on the supernatural.

Teachability also depends on a attitude of 'I may need the knowledge'. Those who's mind is shut cannot hear what is being said. This may be termed humility; however that word is defined as a modest or low view of one's own importance, not greater than others. That is a negative definition, and the real value should be equality of all peoples.  In Stoic terms, the view from above, distant, where we are ant like.  Equality does not mean right. We can all be balmy on some subjects. Teachability is more about being willing to listen, here and understand. We then need to test the view or concept against our version of reality, our belief system, and either adopt, hold in abeyance, or reject. We may not understand there view or concept either as we may not have the prerequisite knowledge.

Passion

So what drives passion, or is it the root that drives everything else? Passion includes enthusiasm and a strong drive toward something.

Passion seems to arise from the unconscious mind, but it also appears to seeded from rational mind. It is from the same general part of the mind that drives emotions, yet not exactly. It is passion that utilizes the conscious mind as a tool, but does not control it. The conscious mind is therefore a slave to the passion, but with a lot of room for skunkworks. So what does this have to do with food/eating/overeating? That is a good question. Diet can change from a diet that I was able to loose 5 kg/month on for more than a year, to driven craving to eat at an extreme rate overnight. This has all the hallmarks of a change in passions without any intent to change those passions.

Passion may the root of motivation, of desire, and hence the reason we do what we do. It seems that desire is founded on passion. William B Irving has done a nice book On Desire, so what about Passion?

GW Shaw     "insists that there are passions far more exciting than the physical ones...'intellectual passion, mathematical passion, passion for discovery and exploration: the mightiest of all passions'."

I did quite liked exploring what no human had ever seen before, the subsoil on particular sites. It gave a sense of discovery to provide information to build foundations of buildings on.

Exploring the food problem has given me a sense of the state of disrepair, of ignorance, of assumption, of the dietary industry. They seem to know to much to help the individual with overeating issues. Each one holding that only they know how to recover, as the world get fatter. They collectively have only parts of the solution; it is my opinion that even the combined knowledge, although it could help many could not help all.

There is a missing component, the desire to recover, the passion to recover, the motivation to recover. Some talk about it in passing, but I have not found any that get down into the trenches, but leave that up to the individual. There is no school that studies passion, desire, motivation, the drive to volition, that I have yet found. That must be the next pursuit.

A new direction

For some time now I have been struggling with my weight. Paleo did not help, but then I had lost a bunch of weight, coming from 158 down to 92 kgs on low carb, whole foods, which is paleo, atkins, LoBag, sort of concept anyway. I explored a bunch of programs, all of which said " just follow this program and you will lose weight ". None of those programs were of a sort that I could follow. Hunger, cravings, temptation, environment, desires, habits, physical issues, maladaptive eating issues, food addiction, all non-rational effects, made following those plans impossible. So I digressed into spiritual, ie, non-physical endeavors seeking relief. Those did not make much difference either. My weight is climbing, and I seemed unable to not eat.

Now what? Spiritual is largely bullshit, but there is a non-physical part of life, a thinking system that exists. Everybody seems to be trying to describe it but not in real terms, rather as something that might explain it sort of, if we believed that there was a spirit. Consciousness is all we really have control over. Unconscious mind, behaviors, automatic responses, and the like occur, hence they exist if only as the sum of our past experiences. There may also be an interface between the body and mind, as well as the body.

Ok, so we have four potential sources of cravings, the body, primal body-mind interface, unconscious mind, and conscious mind. Hunger arises out of the body, and a bit of fat removes that, but not the craving, the urge to eat.

Now radicalization has become the issue in the media. Is weight loss a form of radicalization against yourself  while we are losing? We become driven, raising an urgent want, but then enthusiasm wains, the need is reduced, and we become unable to maintain. We have not corrected the problem, just controlling the problem, and we have once again lost control.

So when we look at the stages of change, we return to the action stage three times each day. Maintenance and termination are not possible.

But what do I know and where is this going?

Separation of bullshit from fact

Separation of bullshit from fact is a difficult thing to do.

There is even a book: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0691122946

Christianity is full of it, the nutrition industry is full of it. According to Stranton Peele the Recovery industry, psychology and philosophy is full of it. I know the construction engineering, testing industry is full of it. We have a heath industry that does not care about nutrition and a food industry that does not care about health. That suggests that the health care is full of it.

"Suspend judgement", the skeptics cry.

So how should we humans decide what is real food and what is not? If it is natural, it might be food. If it is processed, it is likely not good food, but may be eatable to prevent starvation. Since we are a long way from that, I will suggest that processed stuff should stay on the grocers shelves.

Buddha nails it:
Believe nothing on the faith of traditions, even though they have been held in honor for many generations and in diverse places. Do not believe a thing because many people speak of it. Do not believe on the faith of the sages of the past. Do not believe what you yourself have imagined, persuading yourself that a God inspires you. Believe nothing on the sole authority of your masters and priests. After examination, believe what you yourself have tested and found to be reasonable, and conform your conduct thereto.

Note that Buddha never defined what he meant by god; but from the contest I will suggest that it was the product of a dream like state, or random generation mental state. This is not like the Christian supernatural all knowing all seeing concept, nor the late stoic nature, reason concept. The truth is likely closer to the skeptic void without purpose, empty, meaningless; we need to impose a purpose on it, so we invented philosophy and religion.

So I know nothing, and silence is the easy way of maintaining virtue.

Testing of the separation cravings from hunger and ignore cravings is underway.

Bah - Experts

Dr Sharma's post at http://www.drsharma.ca/practical-guide-to-obesity-prevention-in-schools-in-developing-countries.html leads to http://www.drsharma.ca/wp-content/uploads/Guide-Obesity-Prevention-in-Schools-Final-Delisle-et-al.pdf.

All very interesting but in section 6.2 or so states

The Theory of Planned Behaviour (Ajzen, 1991) is an extension of the Theory of Reasoned Action (Ajzen & Fishbein, 1980). The main assumptions of the theory are (Ajzen, 1991): 1) individuals usually behave rationally; 2) they take into account the information that is available and use it; and 3) they consider the implications of their actions before undertaking a behaviour. The behaviour under study should be well defined.

Ya Sure. individuals usually behave rationally. In who's world? It is not so much irrational and we do not know the reason for the actions. They never experienced one of my "feeding frenzies". Nothing rational there. Consider a different but dangerous act. Aggressive driving. Why do people it? Most do not think the way they drive is aggressive or dangerous. They drive the way they have been taught by society. Do you see what I am saying? Our weight tells us we are doing something wrong, but the government does not have a clear understanding of the reasons we overeat. Until they get those and frequently state and list all those, the are just beating there gums.

The primary reasons we eat? Hunger, appetite and cravings. We need to understand all these and the contributing factors, and remove these before we, society, can recover.

There have been a few people who tried to divide human behavior into three categories: reptilian, mammalian, and neo-mammalian; aka, physical or biological, chemical, then emotional, unconscious, habit and final rational. If overeating were rational, there would be no problem. Overeating is in the first two categories except for willful overeating, or FU eating.

All I can say is good luck. But of course, if we had a solution, all these people would be unemployed. Follow the money and avoid the solution.

Enough

Passion vs Rational

First, I need to thanks those who read this blog, and comment. Writing helps clean my understanding of the issue and express those concepts. It is interesting how many ways the same nebulous concept can be expressed and remain nebulous. Smoke. Not solid. Changing. Yet similar. Same core, different process.

Passion verses rational may not be the correct terms but this concepts shows up in many places. We have a passion side, aka; animal, lizard, primitive,  unconscious, habitual, automatic, and a rational or intellect, the academic side, which plans, computes, theorizes and the like. It may be more a unconscious automatic verses a rational though out response. Some have likened it to the dual core processor; but the two cores using different methods. We humans have evolved or not, but in big populations, the change is not uniform; there is a population range. Some of us are more passion driven, other more rational or reason driven. Most are a mix of the two. I assume that the craving is animal, while the desire to be of a normal weight is rational. At this level, the cause of the cravings is not important, but there is a couple of craving characteristics we need to look at. First is the strength, and secondly the duration and fading or adaption.

Are we more rational driven or passion driven? The famous marshmallow experiment, where children were given a marshmallow, and were told that if they did not eat it for 15 minutes, they could have more. Those that weighted (ok, the other one, waited) also did better in later life in a number of ways. I believe what really tested was if the child was passion driven or rational driven.

Now which am I? Although I, the rational me, would like to think of myself being rational, the test shows me to be passion or animal driven. We are a mix of the two. Which one is stronger? Separation of the craving as animal, and overcoming it with a rational response is the only method of recovery; it is the awareness of the actual action, or are we just doing a process, that is different. How well it works is a function of the actual strength of the relative signals, the persistence of the signals, and the adaption.

Now that I have gone through the "engineering" analysis of all this, what is the point? There are numerous process that lead us through the life, and may ways can work. It is all about the strength of the signal, the resistance, persistence, weakening, or strength gain. Environment, temptation,  availability,  are big factors.

If the craving is persistent and strong, the relief always available, and the resistance just a struggle, we at time will fail, slide, and consume. Or we can struggle against the desire, compulsion, natural characteristic, using any method available. Always being aware of the struggle, and watching we never slip, (mindfulness) regardless of what we call it, is required. Consciousness of this problem 24/7/365.25 is required. No letup, ever. It does get overwhelming at times.

The worst part about all this is the non-support from those who do not understand the problem, pushing crap, when they do not live the hell. There are those who push impractical advise, usually those who also do not have nor understand the real problem.

And still at times, the only thing to do to relieve the craving is to eat.

Self Control vs Self Displine

Time, gentlemen, please. In the view from rigorous honesty and no mental laziness,  there are four concepts in time, past, present, future, and never never. We can control and modify our beliefs. As I recall from an English in the classes that I did not sleep through, some words belong in each phase of time and others do not, but the names escape me. Also there are words that have negative connotations if not definitions.

Discipline is one of those words. It implies that some rule set for future events did not occur, an expectation, and now, the past event failure is being visited upon us currently. Cannot do anything about it except take the abuse, even if we are doing it to ourselves, as in self abuse. It is the expectation that is out to lunch.

Self control, however, is in the present, and does not step out of the present tense. We can lose self control, as the desire to ____ (eat) is too large, and we can work on the desire to lessen the desire, or increase self control for the next time. Change only happens in the present. No guilt, no blame, just a desire which is beyond our direct and absolute control got out of hand. Now we need to live with the consequences.

Hope is another of those future looking words that create expectations without a real plan how to achieve the plan. Plans must not only be necessary but sufficient. There in lies the problem. Necessary and sufficient. It is the sufficient part that is our downfall. Self control allows for less than ideal performance, it can be better than last time, and still be a success. No expectations, no failure.

Buddha said something about expectations being the cause of unsatisfactoriness. Epictetus said some things are up to us and some are not. If we value that which is not up to us, we are in for misery. Oh well, life of some form, will go on.

Trained to Overeat?

Who does one train out something that is trained in? I was trained to overeat. It turns out, not so easily to undo that training. Trained in become habits, residing in the unconscious part of the brain/mind. So now we need to consciously lay down a new track, and make sure we never venture down that old track again. Not so easy to avoid that old track of convenience, of least resistance.

One of the best methods is to take on something like low carb, Atkins, Paleo, 19th Century, Primal, that is substantially different that the way one was eating. Now the ways is clearly different. Three meals a day, nothing in between, one day at a time (301). But what if after the initial weight loss, the weight starts to creep back? Now what? Meal size is the issue, and a continual craving. No body has the answer for that one.

Those who know most about cravings say it should go away if you do not eat any of these list of foods of addiction like, but it does not, has not. Medical industry does not have an answer, psychology does not have an answer, beyond "that is a physical issue". Everybody is pointing figures. The ancients do have answers to philosophical and psychological problem but not to unrelenting craving, or this aspect of the problem.

So what is the solution? Woo suggests a shot of vinegar after a meal, but the best I can do is a pickle.  it does not help that I can see.

The ancients  suggest prayer, but their notion of prayer does not require a belief system. It is prayer, petitioning for what is within out power, like the letting go of the desire for food. That sets out mind up for the letting go of the desire for food. This sounds like self talk of the good kind.

Enough.

Purpose of life 2

It is all empty and meaningless. I know nothing. What a freeing place to be. Now I can rebuild myself in present time, one layer at a time, like the way I took myself apart. At the center is a void. Nothing. Empty. Meaningless. I guess I will blow up a balloon and get started. Later I will let the air out, and pull the balloon out, and void should remain inside a new crust of me as before.

The first layer will be tranquility. All life is empty and meaningless to nature, to the world that exists. Material things cannot understand meaning or purpose, they just are physical things; they do not care. Only humans ( or other rational beings) can divine up concepts like meaning and purpose. Nature has given us desire to eat and copulate, and the ability to produce a purpose concept to motivate ourselves in some direction, but nature did not give us purpose. All nature gave us was desire, and we create purpose to direct that desire. There is the opportunity.  To create a belief system that "must" be followed, and give a bit of money to me and/or follow me blindly, and you will be fine. Sounds like all religions except perhaps buddhism and the philosophies.  They do the pitch we will provide concepts and you can choose the right ones if you can.

Socrates. Know yourself. WTF does that really mean? All is empty and meaningless? We, as adults, can craft ourselves to be what ever we want to be? So the second layer must be purpose, or should it be virtue, so that we have something to test against, and can achieve satisfaction and stoic joy. Temperance, courage, justice, perseverance, wisdom are early layers, as is a special layer of rigorous honesty. Compassion for others, while and the same time detachment from the events about me because it is all empty and meaningless anyway save the purpose we humans put on something. We create our own purpose, so we do, us humans. No religion has a grip at this point. God is not dead; he never existed.

We can create our own priority lists: life, offspring, friends, people, community, city, province, region, nation, world, no piss on the world - is is screwed until all realize that it is all empty and meaningless, and start to work together for a common purpose of survival and development for all. Those who choose to sit on there asses can starve in the dark. It is all empty and meaningless anyway. Yes. Purpose can be created and worked for to achieve. It is all based on faith and belief in a system based on logic, yet how would one sell this. The answer is obvious: start a religion. My way or the highway.

We humans impose purpose where none exists. It provides direction; a reason to get up in the morning. A Birdge Over the River Kwai sort of concept. So what is next in the rebuilding of self? Food, shelter, clothing, shelter, or purpose, duty, responsibility, persistence, rigorous honesty, family, community, or my specific purpose, what ever that may be?

A study of time shows that only the present is of importance. Past is history and can be forgotten,  the future is "but a dream", and then there is never-never, the fourth phase of time, which we live in so much of the time, sitting in front of TV, engrossed in fiction reading. Of course I read nutrition stuff and, as it turns out, much of that is fiction. Oh well, that is the past.

Enough.

Purpose of Life

So what is the purpose of life? It is only to reproduce and grow more humans until we overpopulate this limited sphere and start suffering and dieing off due to shortages of energy, food, omega 3 oil, or other resource? Or will we turn more violent and kill each other off to get "our share" of needed resources?

I have talked about this before at  http://oathursdaynightgroup.blogspot.ca/2013/04/the-purpose-of-life.html and http://oathursdaynightgroup.blogspot.ca/2012/07/what-is-our-purpose.html.

All this assumes there is purpose, and that we humans can produce a concept of purpose. But there is a greater question, does nature have a purpose for humanity? Or is it all meaningless development, growth, without a purpose. Any concept of god would suggest that there is purpose, but we know that god is a humanization of nature, not a real supernatural or natural being, in short a human construct, likely to explain that which we could not. This is not unlike "She who must be obeyed" philosophy. But if there is not a "god", who or what would creates a purpose? It is all just a rolling cylinder, with direction but without it's own source of energy, no plan, no purpose? Who can know where it will end up.

Human development in then meaningless, but we humans can make the best of it anyway. We can be motivated into what ever we fancy is our ultimate end game. To create, to reproduce, to develop, and to support those activities. Or we call all just fight, kill each other. We could, if we chose, to evolve into a society where we all work together for the common good, where force will not be used to compel adherence to a political or philosophical belief system. The StarTreck prime directive could be held as one of our esteemed laws, and reason rules the behavior of people. Yah Sure, not likely.

We are all driven by our desires. Can we learn to direct these desires? The desires exist strongly in   many of us; for too much food; gluttony, greed, and similar terms can be applied. But is it too much desire, lack of proper directions for desire, or are we just using an available resource to satisfy an unresolved desire. Is that why there is so much overlap in excesses, alcohol, food, sex, drug, gambling, just an unfulfilled desire that would be better directed elsewhere?

Enough Eh?

Choice

If I do not do as I always have done, then what do I do? Habit eh. Habit is trained in behaviors. That is not to say that the training was deliberate, or intended. That is not saying what we learned was what was the intended lesson, if indeed there was even one. In life there are many unknowns, and this is one more. Looking back on life to see where and when I learned to overeat has been interesting. I did not know until recently. There is a picture of me, preschool, as a normal sized kid, and my grade one school picture as a porker. In grades two and three, I was pouring on the pounds. Going to school was a big stress for me, and the concept of "support" was just not there. Oh well, I survived. We only talk to the survivors. I recall a few kids who just stopped coming to school, and were never talked about again. I now assume that these were suicides, but I do not know.

That was in the first years of school amalgamation, where the local schools were closed, and we were bussed in to a central location, into big classes, perhaps 35-39 per classroom, two classes per grade,  as I recall. There was considerably more students than there were people in the town. One hour buss rides were common, a few longer.

There was winter and spring. Winter, the buses did not / could not run some days due to snow storms and/or extreme cold. Then the melt came in the spring; water, mud, creeks, and no way to get through. I remember the County building the last two miles of road past the log house we lived in when I was in high school. Oh well. But I digress.

There is one more reason we overeat: habit. This joins the list: habit, willful overeating, endogenous chemical physical causes, environment and temptation, maladaptive emotional behaviors, addiction to exogenous chemicals and the like.

Now how does one overcome habit that is ingrained into the unconscious? First, we must recognize it as habit. Two eggs for breakfast, why, because that is what I have always had. Habit. Lack of self control, because I want, needy pig, habit. I do have a choice, but what will I become if I do not do as I always have done? Thin perhaps.

Speed of digestion/absorption

The speed of digestion and absorption comes into hunger, Cooked food digest quicker. So do ground foods. Perhaps even well chewed foods. Does this impact weight? Does this also effect the time to satiation? You bet. The solution? Metered meal. Go away. Work at something we enjoy and are engrossed in until it is time for something else. Driven by the clock and a continuous stream of activity or functions, not involving food.

Such is the life of the physical caused craving person.

Relationship between Palatability, Satiation and Cravings

It seams that for some people, there is a relationship between the palatability of foods, the satiation provided and cravings or irrational or unwanted desire for foods.  I think I have spoken of this before, but, OH well, one more time.

Now the tabular way I see this relationship is:

Palatablity
Satiation
Cravings or desires
Hyper Palatablity
Very low, More please
More please
High Palatablity
Low, more
Could eat
Medium Palatablity
enough
enough
Low Palatablity
Enough already
No Thanks
Un Palatablity
No thanks
No way

So what does all this mean? Well it does suggests that one should stay away from high and hyper palatable foods. It also suggest that anything that we do where food is available will raise cravings. This we know.

It also suggest that being a foodie is not good for the weight, nor is associating in any way with foodies. They are dangerous to my health.

Who was the old Greek, Epicurus perhaps but no, that talked about a nation destroyed with too much good food, that gave rise to Spartism. Barley porridge, with a an few weed from the ditch (herbs, spices, vegetables), occasionally a dead fish or dead animal on feast days, or a bit of cheese was a feast (the excretions of one animal fermented in the gut of another dead animal). Hunger was and is the best appetizer.

Or is this all just hedonistic adaptation?
